Alco DL-105

Unit 270, one of two of this model acquired by Gulf Mobile & Ohio (GM&O) seen in service in Chicago, 1974. GM&O had a third unit, numbered 272, a DL109 model.  All 74 produced by Alco of the series, models DL103b to DL109, were built during the WW2 period; an A1A-A1A type powered by a turbocharged straight six, four stroke Alco prime mover rated at 2,000 hp.

Nice views of a detailed HO scale model of this loco are on this webpage.

The GM&O units were taken out of service in 1957.This photo of the 270 taken in Chicago is showing it at the scrappers. The DL-105/109 units operated between St.Louis and Mobile, Montgomery, and New Orleans. They did not run on the former Alton Lines between St.Louis and Chicago.
