vehicles outside NZ's first branch library, Wellington, 1951

A flatbed Bedford truck is outside the entrance to the Newtown public library, established in 1902 as a branch of the Wellington City Library; it was also the first to be arranged under the Dewey Decimal Classification system. It originally consisted of only the central part of the building shown here; the two wings in matching style were added later. It was right opposite the main entrance of the Hospital where the photo above was taken from.  In 1957 it was moved to Constable Street and this building demolished.  Another photo considered for but not used in the book Wellington: a Capital century.
