Auckland Harbour Bridge circa 1959

The "Coathanger" before opening in 1959, just over 1 km long and 142 ft or 43 metres above the water level at high tide.  As everyone knows, poor planning led to the need for four extra traffic lanes attached to the outsides by Japanese engineers - "Nippon clip-ons" - within 5 years.
