Wellington Harbour entrance, 1886

A painting by John Gibb (1831-1909) looking at the Pencarrow coast side of Wellington Harbour entrance.  John Gibb arrived in NZ from his native Scotland in 1876 and painted quite a few scenes like this in the latter 19th century.  Unfortunately we don't know what the main ship in the centre is, which looks to be in the process of being towed out by a steam tug.

This was an illustration considered for, but not used in the book Wellington: a Capital Century for the obvious reason it was outside the time period of that book.
