the Hokitika to Kanieri horse tram

World famous on the West Coast, well in Hokitika anyway: the one time horse tram up the river bank to Kanieri (now spelt Kaniere).  There was no reverse gear and no turntable or Y, so how did the tram go in the opposite direction?  A clue is in the photo below.
