G class Garratt steam locomotive at Paekakariki

We mentioned the New Zealand Railways Garratt in the previous post so here is a picture of it at Paekakariki as published in a New Zealand Railways magazine issue in 1930.  For those who want more information, the best source is the late Jack McClare's book The NZR Garratt Story (1978) of which we have a copy in our library.

Incidentally, when New Zealand soldiers were making their way through Brenner into Austria from Italy near the end of WW2, many said it reminded them of Paekakariki, so here is a 1939 postcard of Brenner.  Well, there is a certain resemblance, but Paekakariki only has hills on one side, and they are a lot lower than those in Brenner.
